Debapratim Roy: Born in 1956 at Mourigram in the district of Howrah, West Bengal, in a respectable family known for its love of literature and the performing arts, Debapratim was able to imbibe in his infancy the spirit of the ambience long before any formal initiation into the world of music.It was under the loving guidance of Late Aparesh Chatterjee, the eminent Sitar artiste of the day,that Debapratim received his initial lessons in the instrument at quite an early age. Subsequently, he started taking further lessons in Sitar under the tutelage of Bidushi Kalyani Roy.Wider worlds unfurled to the vision of the young aspirant as he stepped into the campus of Rabindra Bharati University and had the privilege of coming into close contact with a number of legendary artistes. He topped the list of students getting Bachelor of Arts with Honours in Instrumental Music and enjoyed National Scholarship while doing his Masters. Close Talim from two eminent representatives of Maihar Gharana,Pt.Shyam Ganguly and Prof. Indranil Bhattacharya, the maestros of Sarod and Sitar respectively, supplemented Debapratim’s academic discipline in the university.On the threshold of maturity, Debapratim had the luck to establish a lasting association with Prof. Santosh Banerjee of Rampur Seni Gharana who still guides him in his travels in terra incognita of music.Debapratim is a staff artiste of All India Radio and takes part in concerts all over the country. He is as well a regular performer in popular audio-visual channels.A happy blend of both Tantrakari and Gayaki styles marks his competent rendition of ragas of various colours and moods.
