Pandit Rajeev Taranath, one of the best Sarod maestro of his time, has played Raga Puriya Dhaneshree and Raga Chandranandan on Sarod in this album accompanied by Abhiman Kaushal on tabla. The album is one of his best creations. Happy listening.
Rajeev Taranath is one of India's leading exponents of the sarod. One of the most distinguished representatives of the Maihar gharana performing today, his musicianship is characterized by deep introspection, brilliant technical skill and a highly disciplined approach to the development of a raga. Taranath began formal studies of Hindustani vocal music at the age of six, and before he was twenty, he was a concert and radio artist. At the age of 21, he became a disciple of the great maestro Ustad Ali Akbar Khan. During these early years he also received important guidance from Pt. Ravi Shankar, Smt. Annapurna Devi, Pt. Nikhil Banerjee and Ustad Aashish Khan.
Pt. Taranath has received some of the highest honors and awards including the Indian government’s Sangeet Natak Akademi award in 2000 and the Chowdiah Award in 1998. He has also composed music for several internationally acclaimed Indian films. He has toured extensively in India, Australia, Europe, and the United States, performing for major Indian music conferences and cultural organizations and internationally for universites, western conservatories, and music festivals. In Rajeev Taranath’s music, one hears a relish revealed through a lifetime of rumination and riyaz; a mastery borne of a depth of insight into a raga’s great possibilities.
